Building a treasury data platform from the ground up

Faced with fragmented workflows and a reliance on spreadsheets, Danish industrial group Schouw & Co chose to build its own treasury data platform rather than adopt an off-the-shelf treasury management system.

Speaking at Treasury 360° Nordic, Rasmus Knudsen, data specialist at Schouw & Co, described how the company designed a custom infrastructure based on Microsoft Azure and Snowflake. The system integrates ERP data and banking information to automate FX processes, internal trading, and reporting.

“We did have a TMS but we cancelled the contract,” said Mattias Fornberg, Sales Executive at TIS, explaining that the in-house approach gave the company more flexibility and control. The goal was to avoid being dependent on external consultants for basic changes.

From spreadsheets to automation

A key use case was streamlining FX workflows. Subsidiaries request trades through an internal interface. These are routed via 360T for execution, and payments are processed through TIS. The process includes automated booking and audit logs. “We were utilising our data platform alongside TIS, allowing us to think in new solutions,” Fornsberg noted.

Knudsen underlined the advantages of integrating cloud-native tools with internal systems, highlighting the value of scalable infrastructure in supporting group-wide treasury operations.

One challenge in shifting to cloud tools was identity management. Knudsen shared an incident where he was locked out of systems after losing access to multi-factor authentication. The experience prompted a reassessment of access protocols.

Beyond treasury

With reliable master data now in place, other departments are beginning to adopt the same infrastructure to streamline their own processes. “It’s had a trickle-down effect,” Knudsen said.

By rejecting off-the-shelf software in favour of a self-developed stack, Schouw’s treasury has gained flexibility and long-term control, anchored in data rather than spreadsheets.
