As Sweden’s Cecilia Malmström joined the European Commission in early 2010 – to work first for five years as its commissioner for home affairs (including internal security, migration and more), then another five as commissioner for trade – she was already a seasoned big-issues politician, as well as researcher and university teacher. Three years as Sweden’s EU minister and seven years as a member of the European Parliament, as well as a doctorate degree in political science, were part of her unique foundation. Her engagement for European issues even goes back to her upbringing, part of which was spent in France.
Since moving back home to Sweden with her family, she collaborates with a range of institutions to help them navigate changes and develop policies. Her current main position is one as non-resident senior fellow with the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a think tank based in US capital Washington, where she also hosts the institute’s Trade Winds biweekly virtual event series.
Add to this the engaging presence she brings on stage, and we are obviously super honoured and happy to announce Cecilia’s participation as the opening speaker for Treasury 360° Nordic 2025, in Stockholm on 22 May.
With 2025 approaching, threats of trade restrictions appear to be growing and a broad range of geopolitical tensions and other security risks are in play. How should we make sense of it? By May, we could be seeing US president Donald Trump’s protectionist visions beginning to take concrete shape. All in all, there is a high risk that Cecilia Malmström’s expertise could turn out, by then, to prove more current than ever.
