It is market insight firm Preqin, specialised in alternative assets, that has summed up the year in venture capital deals. And what a year.

Record on record

Picked up by news sites such as Pensions & Investments and Sweden’s Realtid, the report preliminarily puts the amount of venture capital raised in the year at $274 billion. That is up 37 percent from 2017, which in itself was a record year.

Furthermore, as much as another 5 percent could be added, as the collection of outstanding data is completed.

The number of transactions was 14 889, also up around 40 percent, according to Realtid.

Private equity down

Looking at a different investment sector, private equity, Preqin noted a downturn, however, reports Pensions & Investments. 1 175 private equity funds raised a total of $426 billion. In 2017 the numbers were 1 639 funds and $552 billion.
